Footage picked up on surveillance cameras and quick-acting security guards ensured the arrest of six people involved in theft on the station deck.
On Saturday June 20, the City’s Metro Police CCTV surveillance cameras picked up video footage of six suspects at the station deck, stealing from a vendor’s container. The police and City Central Improvement District guards reacted to the call from the control room and all the suspects were apprehended.Â
The suspects, between the ages of 30 and 42, were arrested for housebreaking and theft and detained at the Cape Town Central police station.
Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, said the City’s CCTV cameras played an important role in the early detection of criminal behaviour. “Cameras increase our visible policing footprint and enable rapid responses in instances where criminal activity is detected. These arrests also show that Metro Police officers work closely with the South African Police Service and other enforcement agencies. In most cases where officers were notified by the CCTV control room, they were able to stop the criminal activity or arrest the suspects in the act,” he said.
Also on Saturday June 20, a man was arrested at the station deck for possession of counterfeit movie discs to the value of R4 600, said Cape Town Central police spokesperson, Captain Ezra October.Â
On Thursday June 18, a man was apprehended for robbing another man of his cellphone on the corner of Riebeeck and Bree streets. According to Captain October, the robber was apprehended by the CCID, and was found with the stolen cellphone and a knife in his pocket.Â
On the roads, the Cape Town Traffic Service arrested five suspects on various charges and impounded five vehicles. Officers also recorded 3 797 Covid-19 lockdown-related charges and issued 17 852 fines for various other offences. Â
