Police Minister Bheki Cele and Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula addressed and inspected a law enforcement parade in the city centre on Monday prior to the officers’ deployment to various polling stations ahead of yesterday’s national and provincial elections. Afterwards Mr Cele visited the Civic Centre to monitor the special voting as Monday and Tuesday were set aside for special votes. At the close of voting on election day, at 9pm yesterday, May 8, the returned overseas ballots were to be opened by election officials, counted and added to the national ballot count for each party in the national elections. A total of 29 334 voters received approval to vote overseas. Overseas voters only vote in the national and not provincial elections. The national and provincial results operation centres will remain open until the announcement of results of the elections, scheduled for Saturday May 11.
