Thousands of people lined the streets along Somerset Road’s section of the Fan Walk to watch the colourful floats and dancers in costume parade during the 12th edition of the Cape Town Carnival on Saturday March 18.
A total of 46 community groups participated in the street parade, themed Afri’Energy. This was the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic that the carnival returned to its original format. In the last three years, the carnival took place as static activations in different areas of the CBD.
“Seeing Capetonians flock to the Carnival in their droves tonight reminded us how meaningful this event is to the City, and reminds us why we continue to serve our community of performers and sponsors,” said Cape Town Carnival board chair Professor Rachel Jafta.
“We are so proud of how the Cape Town Carnival has grown to become a world-class event that gives hope to people across our City, regardless of their circumstances. Our performers are proof that you can build a better world and have fun doing it,” said Cape Town Carnival CEO Jay Douwes.
