The Book Lounge will have a special drop-in event this week. Tomorrow, Friday May 17. Koleka Putuma will do an intimate poetry reading, at 6pm. Tickets are R80 at the door.
Storytime and launch of The Boy and the Tree by Marleen Lammers will take place on Saturday May 18 at 11am. Lammers will be reading her story and illustrator Anja Stoeckigt will do a drawing session afterwards. The recommended age group is 3 to 8 years old, but all are welcome.
Tuesday May 21, Harris Dousemetzis will be in conversation with Marianne Thamm at the launch of The Man Who Killed Apartheid by Dousemetzis. The book reveals the extent of the cover-up by South Africa’s authorities and the desperate lengths they went to conceal the existence of Dimtri Tsafendas’s opposition to apartheid.
On Wednesday, May 22, there will be a launch of Like Family by Ena Jansen. The book shows that domestic worker relations in South Africa were shaped by the institution of slavery at the Cape. This established social hierarchies and patterns of behaviour and interaction that persist to the present day, and are still evident in the predicament of the black female domestic worker. Ena Jansen will be in conversation with Sindiwe Magona and Myrtle Witbooi.
On Thursday May 23, there will be a launch of Breaking a Rainbow, Building a Nation by Rekgotsofetse Chikane. This book is a first-hand account of the university protests that gripped South Africa between 2015 and 2017, widely known as the Fees Must Fall movement. Rekgotsofetse Chikane will be in conversation with Refilwe Moloto.
All events are 5.30pm for 6pm, unless otherwise stated, and are free and open to the public. Booking is essential for catering purposes and seats are not reserved. To book, visit the events page at www.booklounge.co.za
