The Summer Grooves music concert at the Castle of Good Hope on Saturday night turned bloody when an altercation between two men resulted in one being stabbed to death.
Police opened a case of murder after the victim died due to his injuries at New Somerset Hospital on Sunday, February 4.
According to Western Cape Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk, an altercation between two unknown males at the event led to the stabbing incident.
“The deceased was stabbed and was treated on the scene for injuries sustained.”
Afterwards, Captain van Wyk said he was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance for further medical treatment, but later died of his injuries.
While the incident happened in the CBD, the docket was opened at Sea Point police, as the deceased died at Somerset Hospital.
Cape Town Central police spokesperson Captain Ezra October said the argument happened in the front courtyard, where one man stabbed another man. He said that they had no details about how many times or where the victim was stabbed, as the docket for the murder was opened at Sea Point police station. However, the docket will be transferred and investigated by Cape Town Central police station.
No one was arrested at the time this article went to print.
Castle of Good Hope chairperson Calvyn Gilfellan passed on “sincerest condolences” to the next of kin and said the public will be updated as information becomes available.
“Safety and security is one of the Castle’s top strategic risks, and this is the first such incident in my 10 years at the Castle of Good Hope.
“However, this is simply one incident too many. I am already engaging the event organisers, their security company and our on-site security to understand what happened with a view to prevent unfortunate incidents like this in future.”
The CapeTowner did not get a response from the organisers of Summer Grooves by publishing time.
We also reached out to the family of the deceased, whose name has not yet been confirmed by authorities or the family, who simply said: “Our family will not be dealing with any media.”
