Friday night belonged to Manenberg’s boxing sensation Wasim Chellan who defended his WBF Africa welterweight title in an action-packed Jackie Brice promoted event in Goodwood.
Chellan prevailed with a hard-fought split decision win against a resilient Malawian opponent, Denis Mwale.
The plan was to make Mwale hit the canvas, which didn’t unfold exactly as Chellan might have hoped, but he openly acknowledged the invaluable experience of his opponent, a factor that prevented the sought-after knockout victory.
Despite the thrilling back-and-forth battle in the ring, the audience came out in full support of Chellan, eager to see their local hero emerge victorious. As the final bell rang, they were not disappointed as Chellan’s hands were raised in triumph, igniting chants of his name throughout the venue.
Chellan expressed his gratitude to the friends, family, and boxing enthusiasts of Cape Town. “I appreciate everyone for coming out,” he said. “We need more of this in Cape Town, we need more boxing. I promised to come and fight, and I did, and I will do it again.”
At the end of the fight night, he noted that it was already time to return to the drawing board to further hone his craft. He is also not against the idea of a rematch, but only if for an even bigger title in the future.

On the other cards, Thembani “Baby Jakes” Mbangatha won the WC Junior lightweight title when he outpointed Bulelani Gondeka who travelled from Mossel Bay.
Before the main event, Lwando Mngambi entertained the crowd with his slick movements in the ring and outpointed Goitsemodimo Poo over six rounds in their Junior Bantamweight fight.
