Workers from the hospitality industry protested in the city centre today against the continued closure of the sector during the national lockdown.Â
Protesters, who participated in a human-chain, were later warned to disperse, and were sprayed with water cannons by public-order police.
Patrons and restaurant dining areas were also hit by the water cannons.Â
The violence from police was condemned by the Western Cape government and the City of Cape Town, saying the industry should be supported by national government, and not shut down by police. Â
