The Cape Town Central Police held an integrated ATM operation in the CBD with various role-players which included neighbourhood watch groups, CCID’s DOCS Chrysalis students, OHCID’s GPCID’s, Cape Town Tourism Ambassador Volunteers on Sunday December 16.
During the operation, the members responded to a complaint from opposite the Standard Bank ATM in Upper Wale Bo-Kaap.
The complainant said he was approached by an unknown man with three other male accomplices, who told him that he could not park his car where it was, and he should get a parking ticket from the Standard Bank ATM and he assured him that the security guard would assist him.
The alleged fraudster told the man to insert both his credit card inside the ATM, but he was distracted by the other suspected accomplices. He then noticed that his card was missing.
Police followed up quickly after receiving information and description of the suspects and the vehicle they were driving in.
They caught up with the alleged suspects at Lower Long ABSA ATM in a getaway vehicle and apprehended one female and three males age in their early thirties the same vehicle described by the complainants after they swapped vehicles.Â
The suspects were arrested by Cape Town Central Saps Crime Prevention with the assistance of the other SAPS partners.
They were detained at Cape Town Central and appeared at Cape Town Magistrate court on Tuesday December 18.
The court opposed bail application the suspects remain in custody at Pollsmoor Correctional Services until their next court date.
