With level 3 lockdown regulations in place, which includes a ban on gatherings among other things, most companies participating in Mandela Day had to think out of the box to do 67 minutes of good in honour of South Africa’s late president, Nelson Mandela.
Mandela Day is celebrated annually on July 18, the global icon’s birthday. This year, it will be on Saturday July 18.Â
The Table Bay Hotel in the Waterfront is still in lockdown, but the chefs will open the kitchens for the first time on Saturday. They are aiming to make at least 1 000 litres of soup as part of the Chefs with Compassion Mandela Day Initiative.
The aim nationally is to make 67 000 litres of soup.
Chef Keshan Rambarun and his team will start prepping at 8am and will cook until roughly 1pm. Beneficiaries will then come to pick up the soup.
