On International Children’s Day, Wednesday June 1, at the District Six Museum’s Homecoming Centre, the Nal’ibali reading-for-enjoyment campaign launched its “FUNda Leader” campaign, which aims to inspire adults across the country to change the lives of children by sharing books and stories with them.
Jade Jacobsohn, Nalibali managing director, pictured, said: Far too few children in South Africa have the opportunity to engage with books and stories in a way that is enjoyable and exciting. As a result, there is often a lack of motivation for children to engage in reading, resulting in direct and very negative implications for future learning success.
Eight-year-old Athandiwe Sikada, of Khayelitsha, tells her story to the audience.
Athandiwe is the winner of Nalibalis nationwide storytelling competition, Story Bosso.
Actress and FUNda ambassador, Denise Newman, addresses those in attendance on the importance of storytelling and volunteering.
Cape Town High School pupil, Bubele Mafilika, was one of the pupils who participated in the Virtual Encounters exhibition at the Central Library’s American corner, which ran from June 2 to 4.
Pupils from various schools across the city enjoyed exploring the fun side of the technology on offer at the Virtual Encounters exhibit
