Disney’s The Magic Box, has extended its run in both Cape Town and Johannesburg due to popular demand, according to the promoters.
The show opens at the Artscape Theatre Centre on Wednesday October 9 and closes on Sunday November 10 before moving to Johannesburg.
The stage musical combines puppetry, elaborate costumes, and projections in a large-scale staging.
The cast members include Sunny Yoon from Bellville, Ghia Hough from Kuils River, and Ashley Scott and Ché-jean Jupp both from Plattekloof Glen.
“Pushing through many hardships and adversities such as lack of work, motivation or even just getting a ‘no’ from an audition, having this thick skin and ability to keep going is vital to make it,” Jupp said.
Scott said: “I love diversifying myself within my craft and constantly challenging myself to improve and be available for anything that is thrown at me.”
Hough said: “My rugby-loving-grandpa loved musicals and took me to see Mamma Mia! when I was 9, at the Artscape, and I looked at him and said, ‘This is what I will do one day.’ I know he would be ecstatic to see me today.”
Yoon said her first show was at Kenridge Primary School in Grade 2 in 2006 where she was a garden gnome.
“I knew I wanted to be on stage forever. Since then I have been lucky enough to have gone to UCT opera where I studied for four years since 2017 and was part of student and CTO productions like The Magic Flute and Don Pasquale,” she said.
She said she then continued studies at the Luitingh Alexander Musical Theatre Academy (Lamta) for two more years in musical theatre where “we were lucky enough to perform on the Theatre on the Bay stage. Last year was my first big musical contract doing Mamma Mia! and now part of Disney’s The Magic Box. How lucky am I?”
