Children get sneak peek at the classics

Children enjoy the classical music.

A few lucky children were allowed into the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) dress rehearsal at the City Hall last week.

The visit was thanks to a collaboration between soprano singer Magdalene Minnaar and Adventure Clubs, a mobile app that creates childhood experiences for parents with small children.

Magdalene has taken up the charge to bring classical music to young children in a monthly concert series she produces called Little Maestros.

The concerts feature between one and four classical musicians at a time in a live performance for small children, in Cape Town and in Johannesburg.

Each month features a different classical composer, like Mozart or Handel, played by a different instrument, such as a cello or double bass. Children are welcome to walk around, dance, and play along while they experience the concert.

But Magdalene had something even bigger in mind for the city’s young classical music lovers.

Working in collaboration with Adventure Clubs founder, Janelle Schroy, Magdalene took her mission to the CPO, where she advocated for them to allow Adventure Clubs and Little Maestros children and their parents to join in the dress rehearsal.

More than 100 moms, dads and children paid to attend the dress rehearsal.
