The Artscape Theatre was presented with its clean audit award trophy by the Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu at the local Cape Town office on Tuesday, April 2.
Attended by the Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille among other dignitaries, the award recognised Artscape’s continued commitment towards conscientious financial expenditure in accordance with all laws governing financial management including the Public Finance Management Act.
The award follows on Artscape’s sixth clean audits in a row findings as tabled in Parliament by Mr Makwetu during October 2018.
The Clean Audit covers the financial statements of Artscape as an agency of the Department of Arts and Culture, as at 31 March 2018.
Artscape’s CEO Marlene le Roux said: “As an agency of the Department of Arts and Culture, the importance of running a clean administration remains paramount given the host of corruption and maladministration allegations we’ve seen exposed at various commissions of inquiries and findings by Chapter 9 Institutions. As a State entity funded by the taxpayer it is imperative that we act with fiduciary responsibility thus boosting the confidence not only of our patrons but our stakeholders too.”
Ms Le Roux dedicated the award to all Artscape employees, describing herself as “the mere conductor of this incredible orchestra called Artscape” while lauding the main players – the staff- for “hitting the right notes all the time”.
The Artscape Council chairperson, HRH Princess Celenhle Dlamini, added: “The council’s due diligence towards the holistic operation of the cultural institution as well as attention to policy detail further led to the six years in a row continual clean financial administration.
“Let us continue to play in harmony and produce the right outcomes.”
The sixth clean audit in a row enables the cultural institution to permanently display the trophy at its premises.
