Upcoming book launches

Book Lounge's Mervyn Soloman.

The Book Lounge at 71 Roeland Street will host the following events.

Storytime and the launch of Goggy Bakes Banana Bread will take place on Saturday February 16, at 11am. John Macfarlane will read the story of Goggy. There will be a colouring-in activity afterwards, and some banana bread treats. There is no charge and no need to RSVP. The recommended age group is 3 to 8 years old, but all are welcome.

The launch of Africa’s Cause Must Triumph: the collected writings of AP Mda by Robert Edgar and Luyanda ka Msumza will take place on Wednesday February 20. AP Mda served as the African National Congress Youth League president from 1948 and his peers regarded him as the foremost political intellectual and strategist of their generation. He was known for his passionate advocacy of African nationalism, guiding the ANC into militant forms of protest, and pressing activists to consider turning to armed struggle in the early 1950s. Mda left a rich written record, through letters and essays in newspapers, political tracts and speeches, and letters to colleagues. Robert Edgar and Luyanda ka Msumza will be in conversation with Andre Odendaal.

Launch of North by Frank Owen will take place on Thursday February 21. Diane Awerbuck and Alex Latimer first collaborated, writing as Frank Owen, on the novel South. Now they’re back with the sequel North. The USA has been ravaged by civil war. It’s been 30 years since the first wind-borne viruses ended the war between North and South.

While the South has been devastated by disease, the North has emerged victorious but terrified of reprisals. Both territories remain at the mercy of the vicious Northern dictator, Renard. Two survivors, Dyce and Vida, journeyed deep into the Southern terrains in search of a cure for Renard’s chemical warfare. Now they find themselves scouring the Northern territories on a new and far deadlier pursuit: to eliminate Renard himself. Could Dyce and Vida unite a fractured America – and at what cost? Diane Awerbuck and Alex Latimer will be in conversation with Sam Wilson.

All events are 5.30pm for 6pm, unless otherwise stated. Events are free and open to the public, however, guests must RSVP for catering purposes. Seats are not reserved.
